Expansion Brainspotting: Working at the Level Where Things Shift

There are times in therapy where understanding is not the issue.

You may already:

  • have insight

  • know where things come from

  • and be able to explain your patterns

  • and you may just have a feeling, but not a specific memory

  • or you have a desire for an imagined future

And yet, something still feels held.

This is where approaches like Brainspotting become particularly valuable.

What Brainspotting Works With

Brainspotting works with how experiences are stored in the brain and body.

Not just:

  • what happened

  • or how you think about it

But:

👉 how it is still being held internally

This can include:

  • trauma

  • emotional experiences

  • stress responses

  • or patterns that haven’t fully processed

Brainspotting

Why We Don’t Always Start Here

Brainspotting is powerful — but it is not always the starting point.

In my work, we first ensure that:

  • there is enough stability

  • the nervous system is able to regulate

  • and the work can be held safely

This may involve:

  • grounding

  • resourcing

  • understanding patterns

  • or working through specific experiences first

Because depth work requires capacity.

What Expansion Brainspotting Means

Once there is enough stability, once we have resolved the trauma, Brainspotting can be used not only for healing — but for expansion.

This is where the work moves beyond:

👉 resolving what is difficult

and into:

👉 creating space for something more

This can include:

  • clarity

  • confidence

  • emotional range

  • and a greater ability to hold what life is asking of you

  • an embodied experience of what is possible, so your neural-processing knows what to focus on

What This Work Feels Like

People often notice:

  • a release of emotional intensity

  • a shift in how experiences feel

  • and a sense that something has moved — even without needing to analyse it

  • And knowing that the future they envisioned is happening

Because the work is happening at a level deeper than thought.

How This Fits Into Therapy

Brainspotting is one of the approaches I integrate into therapy.

It is used:

  • when the timing is right

  • when the system is ready

  • and when deeper processing is needed

  • when you are really ready for the deepest change, it can be intense and not everyone is ready for it

It is not about forcing change.

It is about allowing what is already there to process and shift.
